Sak Yant - Beliefs and Practices

With time, the traditional Thai tattoo, Sak Yant, has evolved with regards to beliefs and practices.

☯️ BELIEFS ☯️

Like all spiritual subjects, there are different viewpoints and beliefs in relation to Sak Yant. They may be classified into three categories:

1) People who see Sak Yant as a nice exotic art. They get their Sak Yant tattoos from some tattoo shops in Thailand or buy t-shirts with printed Yants in the market in Thailand. They don’t know the meanings and purposes of the Yants they wear.

2) People who believe that Sak Yant can bring something good to their everyday life. They get their Sak Yant tattoos from Sak Yant masters (Ajarns) in Thailand or elsewhere. They know the meanings and purposes of the Yants they wear.

3) People who believe strongly in the magical power of Sak Yant like in the ancient time. Some also believe that Sak Yant can protect them from gun shot and knife wound. They only get Sak Yant from well known Sak Yant Ajarns in Thailand.

Most Sak Yant passionates (especially men) in Thailand are of the 3rd category but there are more and more Sak Yant lovers in the 2nd category today.

👦 We hope to help foreigners who start in the 1st category to evolve to become Sak Yant lovers in the 2nd category by providing simplified information. At least, they should know what they wear whether as a Sak Yant tattoo or a Yant printed on a t-shirt. 🙏

🧘‍♂️ PRACTICES 🧘‍♀️

Many people do not know that there are specific practices related to Sak Yant.

Firstly, in order to reinforce the magical power of a Sak Yant, the wearer must cite the associated prayer (Khatha). However, very few people know and practice this.

Secondly, there are certain rules or behaviors that the wearer of Sak Yant must follow. Again, most Sak Yant wearers do not know all the rules.

So there are different practice options :

A) People who cite the prayers and follow all the rules strictly.

B) People who follow some basic rules which essentially guide them towards good behaviors in the society.

C) People who do not follow any rule.

Most Sak Yant passionates and lovers in Thailand choose Option B.

😇 THE MIDDLE WAY 😇

If we apply the Middle Way Philosophy, we should then choose to be part of the 2nd category of people who practice Option B.

This would help us to be confident and a good person in our everyday life. 🙏
